Kanaan gives Danica some advice even after a terrible weekend at the Brickyard

Tony Kanaan exchanged hugs and handshakes with his whole Andretti Autosport team when Bump Day ended…. And he is in the show. Bring on next Sunday.

Last season, Kanaan finished sixth in the standings, a distant 230 points back of  Dario Franchitti, and didn't record a win last season. It’s not like Kanaan has been bad at Indy either. Despite not reaching Victory Lane, he's led in seven of his eight Indianapolis 500s. But also has crashed the past two races. Just some bad luck, just like this weekend.

Green cars used to be taboo at Indy and most drivers would avoid the color at all costs.. Maybe a color change would do him good.

On Danica and her outburst after her sub par qualifying effort.

Kanaan said that he talked to Patrick and she realized that what she said Saturday was wrong.

“She definitely needs to change her attitude. Not against the public or the fans,” Kanaan said. “In herself. She’s not happy with herself right now. And I can understand that. I can relate to that because I’ve been there. I had a terrible year last year.”

“I think my best advice to her, which I told her last night, is you’ve got to learn from the tough times,” Kanaan said. “The same guys that she finished fifth in the championship last year and won her first race, they’re still there. Those are the same people. In racing, besides having a good setup and a good car, I believe that your attitude counts a lot.

“The best advice I said to her was, ‘Look, start having fun again.’ When you wake up in the morning in your bus and you can’t wait to go to the racetrack and see your guys, it’s the best feeling. But when you wake up in the morning and say God, I’ve got to drive a race car again, that’s not good.”

Maybe Tony should talk to Marco as well. He said his car was “pathetic” or maybe do as Helio and Dario did this weekend. Seek divine intervention. It worked for them.

“I was joking with Dario. I saw Jesus three times out there. Dario said, Well, I spoke with him many times”. Said Castroneves in a post qualifying press conference.

Andretti Green IndyCar Post Race Quotes
     2009 Indianapolis 500
    May 24, 2009

    Driver:  Danica Patrick
    Car:  #7 Boost Mobile/Motorola Dallara/Honda/Firestone

Danica Patrick: Started 10th, finished 3rd
"The Boost Mobile/Motorola guys did a great job in the pits today and we had great stops all day. I had a really strong car for the last few stints and would have loved to see the last 35 laps raced green. I know we would have had no issues making it to the end without stopping. I was happy to keep the #7 car up front toward the end of the day. It was a great race for the fans and I'm happy for Helio (Castroneves); he was super fast all day."

    Driver:  Tony Kanaan
    Car:  #11 Team 7-Eleven Dallara/Honda/Firestone

Tony Kanaan: Started 6th, finished 27th
"The race didn't end the way we hoped it would for Team 7-Eleven. Something on the car broke in the middle of the straightaway and I hit head on going into turn three. It's always sad to be out of a race but I'm happy that I walked away; it was a nasty, nasty crash. I have to thank the Delphi Safety Crew and the IRL; that was a 180 mile per hour, head-on hit and I'm still standing."

    Driver:  Marco Andretti
Car:  #26 Team Venom Energy Dallara/Honda/Firestone

Marco Andretti: Started 8th, finished 30th
"Today's results were really unfortunate for the #26 car. I'm disappointed for the Venom boys; I think we would have been quick today. We worked hard all month to find a good car and now we'll never know what we truly had today. We just have to move forward and hopefully we'll have a few more shots at winning here. Next weekend is a new race and we'll be ready."

    Driver:  Hideki Mutoh
    Car:  #27 Formula Dream Dallara/Honda/Firestone
Hideki Mutoh: Started 16th, finished 10th
"The #27 car was really good but on the other hand, I was hoping for a better finish. I think that with better luck in the pits we had a great chance at finishing in the top-five. The Formula Dream crew worked so hard and I'm very thankful to be part of a team with so much dedication. I learned a lot today and it was great to drive such a fantastic car. I'm looking forward to Milwaukee next weekend."

FIRESTONE INDY LIGHTS

NOTES AND QUOTES, POST-QUALIFYING
FIRESTONE FREEDOM 100

CHARLIE KIMBALL, #26 TEAM LEVEMIR® FLEXPEN® CAR

  • Will start in P3, with a qualifying speed of 187.375 mph

"Today's qualifying for the Firestone Freedom 100 was good. The #26 Levemir® FlexPen® car performed well in both practices. We've got a really good race car. Starting inside row two will get us a good start, and I think we can make the most of that position. Tomorrow is a big race, but it's still just one in the championship. We're looking for a good result and hoping for a win."

MARTIN PLOWMAN, #27 TEAM AFS RACING/ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT CAR

  • Starts tomorrow's race in P4, with a quickest lap speed of 187.209 mph

"Overall I was a little bit disappointed in our run today. But saying that we were disappointed with the outside of row two says a lot about our high standards and what we expect of ourselves. I was very happy with the #27 AFS Racing/Andretti Autosport car in practice; especially in race trim, we were very fast. We didn't quite get the pole we were hoping for, but P4 is a good place to start. We have 40 laps to come to the front and get the checkered flag."
